A Brief History of Cavens Country House

Cavens is a beautifully restored Georgian country house in the village of Kirkbean (the name refers to the situation of the parish church at the foot of a mountain, in Gaelic). The property was built in 1752 by the Oswald family, although there are also remains of much earlier habitation on the site. In addition to the house, the Oswalds also cultivated the surrounding land and elegant grounds you see today, which include ancient Florence Court Yews and Giant Rhododendrons.

Sir Richard Oswald (1705-1784) was a wealthy merchant in the Georgian era of imperial trade. A powerful and influential family, friends included Benjamin Franklin. Because of his political connections and direct experience of living in America, Oswald was also selected as a negotiator towards the end of the American War of Independence, representing Britain during talks that were concluded by the Treaty of Paris in 1783.

You will see a variety of other portraits and artefacts around Cavens on your visit. Poet Robbie Burns was another notable visitor at the house, but was less flattering towards the family in his “Ode sacred to the memory of Mrs Oswald”. You can see her portrait and read the poem in the Oswald Room.
