Cycling and Mountain Biking in Dumfries and Galloway

Did you know that the bicycle was first invtented in Dumfries and Galloway. Kirkpatrick Macmillan was born in Keir in 1812 and it was there too that he worked at Courthill Smithy as a blacksmith. In 1842 he designed and built the first rear-wheel driven safety bicycle. This enabled a rider to ride the bicycle by means of pedals attached to levers and then attached to the rear wheel. This is an interesting story of how the bicyle then developed and you can read more here

With fabulous countrysde and coastal paths, Dumfries and Galloway has an abundance of trails to explore. The National Cycle Network of over 130 miles traverses the region taking in stunning scenery, jaggy coastline and huge forests. The National Byway provides the opportunity to retrace the roots of the first pedal cycle to Keir Mill, where Kirkpatrick Macmillan first invented it.
