There are some wonderful opportunities for bird watching in the Dumfries and Galloway district. Mersehead Nature Reseves is only a couple of miles from Cavens and further afield, Ospreys have returned in recent years to breed in Galloway. CCTV relays their breeding habits to the Wigtown County Buildings Visitor Centre, where the Ranger and wildlife assistants receive visitors.
The Dumfries and Galloway Council Countryside Rangers help and guide visitors with access to the countryside. They provide a guided walks and talks programme, and co-ordinate the production of the Ranger Led Walks and Countryside Events booklet that lists the activities of other ranger teams and organisations throughout the region. The Rangers are particularly involved at: Castle Loch (Lochmaben) Carlingwark Loch (Castle Douglas) Loch Ken (north of Castle Douglas) Wigtown Bay (near Creetown and Newton Stewart) Western section of the Southern Upland Way (between Portpatrick and Ettrick Head east of Moffat) Scottish Natural Heritage helps to fund the Ranger Service and various aspects of its work including the maintenance of the Southern Upland Way.
